Minneapolis, Minnesota

We contribute to the growing quality of community life with major projects in cultural, education, sports and healthcare markets, plus data centers, transportation facilities and much more.

Some of our successes include the Walker Art Center, which re-opened to world-wide notice. Other projects include smaller, quieter cultural venues such as the performing arts center at Bethel University, MacPhail Center for the Arts, and the Bigelow Chapel at the United Theological Seminary.

Our work has helped shape the Minneapolis skyline. Some of our notable project successes include the Wells Fargo Tower, 50 South Sixth Street, the Hennepin County Government Center, Metropolitan Center, LaSalle Plaza and the Minneapolis Central Library.

Our relationship with the University of Minnesota began in 1963 and since then we have completed more than 80 projects, totaling almost $550 million. Projects have ranged from luxury suites at Mariucci Arena to complex biological science classrooms and labs such as Jackson Hall sports faccilities, such as TCF Bank Stadium.

We have built the facilities for the four major sports franchises in Minnesota – the Target Center (Timberwolves), Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Vikings and Twins), and Xcel Energy Center (Minnesota Wild). Most recently, we completed Target Field, new home of the Minnesota Twins, which was called the "coolest ballpark in America" by Twin Cities Business magazine. We also serve collegiate and community center sports and recreation needs, with projects for the National Sports Center, St. John’s University, and the Shoreview Community Center, among others.

We have provided facilities for entertainment and hospitality that include special habitat and exhibit space at the Minnesota Zoo, and the redevelopment of a brownfield site into a 4-star hotel in Bloomington. Currently we have underway an expansion to the casino and hotel at Grand Casino Hinckley.

Our work extends to Iowa, where we have completed $725 million in projects since 1979. Recent activity is highlighted by the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville as well as the renovation of historic Kinnick Stadium and the Hancher Auditorium replacement facility on the campus of the University of Iowa. We are also providing services in North Dakota, building the new Jamestown Hospital.

The Minneapolis office has contributed to the health of our community by building state-of-the-art medical facilities. Our first healthcare project was an addition to Swedish Hospital in 1956. We also built the original Fairview Southdale Hospital in 1964, and our most recent was the opening of the Abbott Northwestern Heart Hospital. Our relationship with Abbott Northwestern/Allina began in 1958 and includes more than 25 projects.

In 2009, we were named a "Great Place to Work" by Minnesota Monthly, and in 2002 had also been named one of the “Great Places to Work” by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. In addition, the Minnesota Safety Council awarded a Governor's Safety Award to Mortenson for excellence in workplace safety and health.
