Mortenson Receives First Annual Outstanding Safety Achievement Award from Iowa OSHA, Master Builders of Iowa

March 3, 2006

Minneapolis, MN – The Master Builders of Iowa (MBI) and Iowa OSHA selected M. A. Mortenson Company as the winner of their first annual safety achievement award. The award was presented at the MBI Leadership and Awards Breakfast, February 9, 2006, held in conjunction with the Iowa Construction Exposition in Des Moines.

Mortenson was pleased and honored to receive the recognition, which is the culmination of the company’s focused effort to reduce and, ultimately, to eliminate all worker injury. The company is currently engaged in major construction projects for Wells Fargo Financial in Des Moines, renovation of the historic Kinnick Stadium at the University of Iowa, and the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coralville. For 2005, Mortenson employees based with the Minneapolis Operating Group worked more than half a million hours with no lost time injuries.

Since the implementation of Mortenson’s Zero Injury program in 1995, Mortenson’s safety performance has consistently improved each year. For the last three years, Mortenson’s injury experience has been far superior to construction industry standards as compiled by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and has now reached “world class” performance levels based on standards set by the Construction Industry Institute.  Mortenson’s customers benefit directly from this world-class performance, and can be confident that all workers on their projects participate in one of the best safety programs in the industry.

Mortenson’s Safety Director Chris Tschida stated, "This award represents a team effort. It could not have been achieved without the continued efforts of senior leadership, our project teams, and each team member, subcontractor, and vendor that actively demonstrates their participation in our Zero Injury Program. Zero is Achievable!"
