Mortenson's Federal Contracting Group Awarded Helicopter Training Facility
April 30, 2006
Minneapolis, MN - Mortenson's Federal Contracting Group recently announced their selection for an $11 million design-build project consisting of the design and construction of a 27,000 SF Helicopter Training Facility at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. In addition to the new facility, the project entails remodeling 8,400 SF of an existing building and demolishing a 6,000 SF facility currently in the footprint of the new training facility. The facility will include 4 training bays with flight simulators for instruction on flying the MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter.
The MH-60S is a new helicopter for use by both the Navy and the Army. It was designed by taking the better features from the Army's Blackhawk helicopter and the Navy's Seahawk helicopter and combining them into a new state of the art helicopter. The MH-60S features the latest technology in warfare related equipment. The primary missions of the MH-60S fleet include combat search and rescue, special warfare support and airborne mine countermeasures.
This project was competitively bid and is part of the Industrial MACC Program. This will be Mortenson's 5th major project at the Naval Airstation. This project has the potential of having another 28,000 SF added on to it in 2007, including 4 more simulator bays. The design process has commenced, with construction scheduled to start in August, 2006 and to be complete in September, 2007. Our design partner is The Benham Companies out of Oklahoma City, OK.
