Seattle, WA - Mortenson's Benjamin D. Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building at the University of Washington was this year's recipient of the BIM Award for "Design / Delivery Process Innovation Using BIM". The award is given by the AIA Technology in Practice Knowledge Community.

Presentations were judged on the following criteria:

  • Quantifiable benefits in cost, schedule, or quality
  • Interoperability between software applications
  • Effective team collaboration
  • Project change that "moves the ball forward"
  • Cultural change
  • Return on value

According to the award submission, the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) project team exhibited a strong, interdisciplinary, collaborative spirit, always focusing on doing what was best for the project. BIM played an effective part in project team collaboration, fostering communication and understanding in owner’s meetings, design discussions, trade/subcontractor meetings and continues to play a role in operations and maintenance today.

The submission also included the top 10 uses and benefits of using BIM on the project, including enabling early and collaborative decision making, resulting in lower project costs, and anticipating and resolving more than 1,500 systems conflicts before they became problems.
