Mortenson Awarded Abbott Northwestern Hospital's New Mother-Baby Building
June 29, 2007
Minneapolis, MN - Mortenson's Minneapolis office was recently selected for Abbott Northwestern Hospital's next big project on their Minneapolis campus to provide preconstruction services for a new Mother/Baby Building. In 1958, M. A. Mortenson Company started its distinguished tenure in health care construction at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. To date, Mortenson has completed 70 projects on the campus totalling 2.4 million square feet.
Abbott, which delivers 4,000 babies every year, and Minneapolis Children's Hospital, a leader in Minnesota, have joined up to create a substantial facility for the Twin Cities region. However, they have not decided where to build it or how big it should be. Therefore, they recognized the need to bring a construction partner on early in the process to help with location assessment, constructability, scheduling, and budgeting.
"Getting involved this early is unusual for us" said Bob Steffel, Construction Executive for the project. "We'll be working with the Hospitals and the design team to analyze several options - new, remodel, or a combination of both - to help select the best scenario. Our years of exceptional work and extensive knowledge of the campus was a key reason they choose us as their strategic partner."
The Architect on the project is Ellerbe Becket. Preconstruction is underway and construction is expected to begin next spring and the construction cost is currently tracking at about $40 million.
