Mortenson Construction Leads Minnesota Contractors in Sustainable Construction

September 26, 2007

Minneapolis, MN - Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction was ranked by Engineering News-Record (ENR) as the 17th Top Green Contractor in the U.S.  This is the first time that ENR, a weekly magazine that reports news and intelligence on the global construction market, has measured the Green market by ranking contractors. The ranking was based on contractor revenue in 2006 from projects that were either registered or certified with a major third-party environmental standards or ratings group.  In 2006, Mortenson reported revenues of $133 million in sustainable projects, representing 9% of their total revenue.

“Ranking 17th in the U.S., and being the highest ranked contractor in Minnesota, is a testament to Mortenson’s commitment to sustainable building practices,” said Ken Sorensen, vice president of the Minneapolis office.  “In addition to having significant sustainable construction projects, we promote green best-practices companywide.  It’s what we do.”

Mortenson’s Minneapolis office recently completed St. Mary’s/Duluth Clinic expansion, the nation’s largest LEED® Gold Certified healthcare facility, and the Minneapolis Central Library, which adopted the Minnesota Sustainable Design Guidelines.  Mortenson is the contractor for the University of Minnesota TCF Bank Stadium and is pursuing LEED certification on that facility, which would make it the first LEED open-air stadium in the country.

Mortenson is also pursuing LEED certification for the renovation of their Minnesota office.
