Mortenson's Sprint Center Receives Safety Excellence "Best of the Best" Award

November 2, 2007

Minneapolis, MN - Mortenson Construction is pleased to be the recipient of the Kansas City Builders' Association and AGC's first Safety Excellence Award in the category of General Contractor - 100,001 to 300,000 workhours. Chosen from the winners of each category, Mortenson is also the honored recipient of the Association's "Grand Award for All Divisions" Safety Excellence Award, which was presented by representatives from the regional office of OSHA.

Mortenson was chosen over its Kansas City peers based upon an evaluation by representatives from industry, government, and higher education of our safety program, culture, and performance at Sprint Center. Mortenson had previously been lauded for being the first general contractor in Kansas City to formally partner with OSHA and the Builders' Association, as well as, being the first general contractor in Kansas City to formally partner with the City's Full Employment Council, AFL-CIO, and the Building Trades Association.  These actions eliminated traditional barriers, created collaborative relationships, and contributed to Sprint Center's safe and healthful work environment.

Mortenson's Sprint Center team, and the entire Mortenson organization, can be very proud of the successful experience of Sprint Center, having safely delivered a quality building on time and within the guaranteed maximum price, and having exceeded the community's expectations for inclusion of minority labor and business. All this while competing for skilled labor and competitive subcontractors in a market that is experiencing a $5 billion dollar urban core redevelopment.

Sprint Center is an 18,000 seat multipurpose arena that contains dual locker room and training facilities that will eventually accommodate both a professional basketball and a professional hockey team.  State of the art audio and visual systems, a full compliment of concessions, and management by AEG are sure to propel this venue to one of the most sought after by promoters nationwide.  The CBE is an attached 40,000gsf building that houses the National Association of Basketball Coaches' national headquarters, along with a college basketball coach's hall of fame and interactive areas.
