Mortenson Construction Completes 50th Wind Power Project
January 15, 2008
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Mortenson Construction recently celebrated the completion of its 50th wind power project. Mortenson has grown to become the leading wind power contractor in North America. In the last decade, Mortenson has constructed 34 percent of the wind energy capacity in the U.S. to date.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, it was only fitting that Mortenson would reach this milestone by completing the project in its own backyard. The Fenton Wind Farm in Chandler, Minn. is the single largest installation of wind energy in Minnesota to date. It has the capacity to produce 205 megawatts (MW) of power, equivalent to powering 66,000 average U.S. homes per year.
With the completion of the Fenton project, 26 percent more clean wind power has come online within the state of Minnesota making it the third largest producer of wind power in the U.S. Mortenson has played a significant role in this ranking by constructing more than half of the wind farms in Minnesota totaling more than 520 MW.
Founded in 1954, Mortenson has built a legacy in construction. Since entering the wind power market in 1995, it’s Energy Group has constructed more than one-third of all wind power in 19 states and provinces, Today, Mortenson has been involved in the construction of over 5,000 MW; the equivalent of supplying 1.5 million homes with electricity.
Mortenson’s vision doesn’t stop at building wind farms, but reaches deep into its operations and corporate culture. One seed within the company’s core values is a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
“We are an example of the green revolution,” said Mortenson’s senior vice president, David Mortenson. “At the end of 2007, our company has installed 34 percent of all of the active wind power in the U.S. and now employs nearly 1,000 people nationwide in delivering wind power.”
In fact, Mortenson is taking many steps in the right direction; from reducing its use of bottled water to powering its headquarters and seven U.S. offices with clean, emission free wind power. It’s clear that Mortenson is committed to leading by example.
"We are committed to environmental stewardship,” said Mortenson’s president & COO, Tom Gunkel. “We reflect that commitment by serving customers who share that same interest, many of whom are directly responsible for bringing new renewable energy projects to life.”
