Mortenson Awarded Northern Arizona University Project

Phoenix, AZ - The Phoenix Office was recently awarded the role of Construction Manager at Risk for the new Northern Arizona University (NAU) Wellness Center.
The project architect is OWP/P; the total project budget is approximately $50 million. The new NAU Wellness Center includes an approximate 35,000 gsf additional and 38,000 gsf renovations of the existing Recreation Center and a 35,000 gsf new campus healthcare facility to accommodate existing campus health services as well as added programs and services. In addition, Mortenson will also be renovating a portion of Lumberjack Stadium.
The new Wellness Center is targeting LEED® Silver at a minimum. This facility will be the first higher education wellness facility to be built to LEED® certification standards. The project is scheduled to begin in January 2009 and open to students in January 2011. This facility will be built on an active campus where disruption avoidance and safety will be of paramount importance.
Components of the new NAU Wellness Center:
An approximately 42,500 GSF addition to and expansion of the existing Recreation Center
A 26,000 GSF new campus student healthcare facility to accommodate existing campus health services as well as added programs and services
A goal of acheiving a, minimum, LEED® Silver Certification
NAU stated, during the interview, that “Mortenson takes BIM beyond what other construction firms do. In particular, Mortenson uses BIM in the field; their end product, provided to the owner, is a fully coordinated model and is a tool owners can use for faclitites management.” The architect also noted Mortenson’s ability to integrate our Building Information Modeling into preconstruction activities, creating an opportunity to support the collaborative project goals.
