Mortenson Selected as the Design-Builder of the Wilderness Road Brigade Battalion Headquarters Building at Fort Carson
October 23, 2009
Colorado Springs, CO – Mortenson Construction is pleased to announce that the company has been selected as the design-builder for the $27.3 million Wilderness Road Brigade Battalion Headquarters Building (BBHQ) at the Fort Carson Army Post. The selection was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, and the project was awarded under a Northwest Division Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC).
The project will house one large Brigade, one medium Battalion and five large Battalions providing space for administrative and command operations. Construction of the 138,000 square foot facility will begin in February 2010 with completion scheduled for February 2011.
“This most recent project demonstrates our ability to provide competitive solutions, is a testament to the relationship of trust Mortenson has built with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the past several years, and we’re very appreciative of the confidence the Corps has in our design-build services,” said Bob Hansen, Vice President of Mortenson. “It’s a relationship that we value greatly, and we’ll continue to work steadfastly to deliver all of our projects in a timely and knowledgeable manner.”
As part of the BBHQ project, Mortenson will pursue LEED Gold Certification over the requirement of LEED Silver, utilize roof top mechanical systems for extra interior square footage, utilize a solar water heating system, use a precast concrete exterior for durability and blast resistance, implement an accelerated schedule in order to deliver the project early, and deliver a proactive site coordination plan.
The design materials and features of the new BBHQ enrich the architectural character of the Wilderness Road complex, creating a dynamic and complimentary aesthetic. Exterior walls will be constructed of insulated precast concrete panels with embedded brick. The BBHQ precast and brick are coordinated with the existing Wilderness Road Barracks and other new Fort Carson projects. The brick in the precast walls also defines and articulates the exterior hierarchy, defining the Brigade, Battalion, and higher security areas of the building facades. Green tinted exterior windows of varying heights provide rhythm and architectural style. Sunscreens will be on all east, south and west facing windows. RSP Architects of Minneapolis will serve as Mortenson’s design partner.
