Mortenson Awarded Fort Lee Munitions/EOD Project
December 1, 2009
Fort Lee, VA - The Norfolk District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Mortenson's Federal Contracting Group with a design-build contract to construct two munitions (MUN) and explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) training facilities at Fort Lee, VA.STV Inc. is Mortenson’s design partner for this project.
Fort Lee is located approximately 35 miles south of Richmond, VA and is home to the Combined Arms Support Command, the Quartermaster Center and School, and the U.S. Army Logistics Management College. The two MUN/EOD training facilities will be built on Training Area 5 (TA-5) at Fort Lee.
The first, the MUN/EOD Training Facility, will be a 104,090 square foot structure to house administrative offices and training areas devoted to repair, laboratory, and automation-aided instructional activities. The facility will also provide counseling rooms, student and staff break and vending areas, restrooms, showers, and locker areas. There will also be utility areas for storage and mechanical systems.
The second, the 10,730 square foot EOD Training Building, will be located on the 10-acre Field Identifications Site, also at TA-5. This facility will also house administrative offices and training areas, including spaces for repair, automation-aided instruction, and a robotics lab with simulators. The site will also include a 3,834 square foot robotics obstacle course.
Each facility will have secure and non-secure areas providing offices for instructors and spaces for ordinance and ammunition identification, inspection, testing, and storage. Together, the two facilities are designed to accommodate over 400 students, the majority of them recruited directly out of basic training as AIT (Advanced Individual Training) students. The remainder will be professional development (PD) students made up of advanced enlisted troops. Training will include courses for EOD Specialists, Ammunition Technicians and Specialists, and Ammunition Stock Control personnel.
Both buildings are designed to complement other structures in area, with red brick facades and columns, blue standing-seam metal hip roofs, and liberal use of classically-proportioned windows, providing abundant natural lighting throughout. These buildings will be designed to meet DoD antiterrorism force protection (AT/FP) requirements and LEED® Silver certification.
