Mortenson Construction Recognized for Health and Safety Excellence by World’s Largest Provider of Wind Power

Minneapolis, MN – Mortenson Construction’s Renewable Energy Groups has been awarded the Supplier of the Year Award for Operational Safety and Health by international company, IBERDROLA, the corporate parent of the world’s largest provider of wind power, IBERDROLA RENOVABLES.

IBERDROLA conducts business in over 40 countries and Mortenson is the first U.S. company to be recognized with this award.

IBERDROLA’s Supplier of the Year award recognizes suppliers based on their technical and productive capacity and their commitment to quality, excellence, respect for the environment, workplace safety, and sustainable development. “Safety is one of the most important criteria in selecting contractors for our projects,” commented Gary LeMoine, CIH, CSP, director, environment health safety security for IBERDROLA RENEWABLES.  “Mortenson helps set the bar for us worldwide.”

Mortenson is currently the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor on IBERDROLA RENEWABLES’ 201.6-megawatt Penascal II Wind Project in Sarita, Texas, and the 300-megawatt Streator Cayuga Ridge project in Odell, Ill.  “It’s a tremendous honor for Mortenson Construction to be recognized by such a prestigious firm. Our goal is to provide value added design/build services by placing safety and our customer’s experience first.” said Tim Maag, vice president and general manager of Mortenson Construction’s Renewable Energy Groups.

Mortenson has completed construction on 10 projects for IBERDROLA RENEWABLES, totalling more than 1,240 megawatts – the equivalent to providing 310,000 homes with clean energy every year.

Since entering the renewable energy market in 1995, Mortenson has become a leading builder of wind power projects in North America.  Today, Mortenson has been involved in the construction of more than 80 wind power projects, totaling more than 8,000 megawatts across the U.S. and Canada.  Mortenson currently employs more than 2,200 people nationwide with dedicated teams to help deliver renewable energy projects to its growing list of customers. 

Engineering News-Record ranked Mortenson 22nd in the 2009 Top 400 Contractors listing.  The company is ranked 11th in Power with 100 percent of this sector’s revenue coming from renewable energy.
