February 8, 2010
U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner landed in the Twin Cities last Thursday, January 28, to learn first-hand from a select group of Minnesota business, labor, and political leaders what Washington needs to do to help further the clean-energy economy. Mortenson CEO Tom Gunkel met with Geithner and presented his thoughts on opportunities in the renewable energy industry to the group and national media in attendance.
Tom discussed three keys to creating renewable energy jobs including,
- Federal support for a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES);
- Federal and state support for a comprehensive National Transmission Strategy; and
- State support for attracting and retaining green manufacturers.
“We applaud all of our local, state, and national leaders who join together in furthering our nation’s green economy,” said Gunkel.
Geithner used the visit to unveil the administration’s plan to expand the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit by $5 billion in the budget submitted to Congress this week. He also credited Minnesota businesses, such as Mortenson, for their leadership in the renewable energy industry.
The event was hosted at Honeywell in Golden Valley. For more on this story, go to MinnPost.com or mpr.org.
