Jefferson Science Associates Selects Mortenson
March 1, 2010
Newport News, VA - Jefferson Science Associates (JSA) awarded Mortenson's Federal Contracting Group a contract to provide preconstruction services for a Technology and Engineering Development Facility (TEDF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virginia. JSA manages the Jefferson Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science.
The new TEDF is part of the DOE Science Laboratory Infrastructure program to upgrade existing facilities. Jefferson Lab, which houses a 1.4 km, racetrack-shaped electron accelerator, supports a growing community of national and international scientific users and occupies a unique and important role in the field of nuclear physics. Jefferson Lab’s primary mission is to conduct basic quark-level research of the atom's nucleus. In addition, the Lab also works with industry and university partners, doing applied research related to free-electron lasers. Jefferson Lab also has a mission to help educate the next generation in science and technology.
The scope of the TEDF project is to provide an upgraded and expanded engineering facility to support DOE projects and includes the renovation of the existing Test Lab Building 58, a 30,000 square foot addition to Building 58, and a new 70,000 square foot Technology and Engineering Development (TED) Building. The first floor of the TED building will have high and low bay space for Engineering Division functions, including an electrical shop, a vacuum assembly and pump repair area, a cryogenic fabrication shop, workspaces for the Physics Division, and shared machine and fabrication shops for the three Physics Halls. The second floor will provide a core area of enclosed offices and an open office and workstation area to encourage teamwork and communication.
The TEDF project will pursue two LEED Gold ratings, one for the TED Building and one for the Building 58 Renovation and Addition. Mortenson is working with Ewing-Cole, the architectural/engineering firm chosen by JSA to design the facility.
