Mortenson Wins Another Fort Sam Houston Project

May 20, 2010

San Antonio, TX — The Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Mortenson a $9.3 million design-build contract for a new 35,000 square foot Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel Housing (UEPH) Barracks at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. RSP Architects is Mortenson’s design partner for this project. This is Mortenson's second project at Fort Sam Houston. Mortenson is also building the new Installation Management Command (IMCOM) Headquarters at Fort Sam Houston.

The new project involves the design and construction of an apartment-style barracks facility that will provide 48 living units for a total of 96 people. Built on a concrete ribbed mat slab, the UEPH structure consists of steel stud bearing walls and composite steel floor decks. The terra cotta colored roof and stone-accented tan brick walls will be compatible with the existing architectural theme of the mission/Spanish colonial revival style at Fort Sam Houston. The UEPH Barracks will be designed to comply with Department of Defense Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (ATFP) requirements and to achieve LEED Silver certification.

The barracks will be constructed on the location of the Fort’s old blacksmith shop, adjacent to a wall of the original Fort Sam Houston, built in 1876. The project will include measures to document the historical significance of the site.
