Joliet Junior College Selects Mortenson as the Developer Design Builder for a New Instructional Facility
July 23, 2010
Joliet, IL — Mortenson was selected by Joliet Junior College to be the Developer Design Builder for a new instructional facility at their City Center Campus. Located in downtown Joliet, Illinois, the state-of-the-art campus expansion—totaling approximately 160,000 square feet—will house various programs including the college’s nationally renowned Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program, and Workforce Development.
Joliet Junior College, a two-year community college with enrollment exceeding 15,000 students, was America’s first public community college, beginning instruction in 1901. It was only the fifth American institution to offer professional training in the culinary arts, and is now highly regarded as one of the top culinary schools in the nation. In fact, chef Michael McGreal, chairman of the College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality department, along with a fellow instructor, are among 1,000 chefs nationwide who are working closely with the White House to develop healthy meal plans for local schools. The “Chefs Move to Schools” initiative is part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against childhood obesity.
