NAVFAC Southeast Honors Mortenson
August 19, 2010
Minneapolis, MN — On June 24, 2010, Mortenson was honored with a visit from representatives of the Southeast Region of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC Southeast). Captain Douglas Morton, commanding officer of NAVFAC Southeast, came to present Mortenson with safety and design management awards for the P-302 Type II Hangar and Aircraft Parking Apron project at the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. Captain Morton was accompanied by Douglas Dangerfield, chief engineer for NAVFAC Southeast.
Captain Morton presented Mort with the Commander’s Coin for Outstanding Safety Contribution in recognition of our achieving over 342,400 hours without a recordable incident on the Jacksonville hangar project and for our leadership in construction safety. Captain Morton acknowledged that Mortenson sets the standard for safety in Navy construction projects and that NAVFAC instructs other contractors to follow our lead.
Mark Forma of HNTB Corporation presented Captain Morton with a glass plaque from the U.S. Green Building Council signifying the achievement of LEED Silver certification by the Jacksonville hangar project team. The Jacksonville Hangar is the first hangar in the Navy to achieve formal USGBC LEED Silver certification.
Capping off the event, Captain Morton presented Mort with the NAVFAC Southeast Merit Award for Design Management. This award is in recognition of our “especially high level of excellence” in the design of the Jacksonville Hangar and parking apron. A letter accompanying the award also made special commendation of our successful efforts to mentor other contractors, including a direct competitor, in the elements of a well run safety program.
