Mortenson Celebrates Ground-Breaking at Fort Carson
October 22, 2010
Fort Carson, CO — On August 26, the Fort Carson Army Post held the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Warrior in Transition Barracks. This is the second building that will become part of Fort Carson’s new Warrior Transition Battalion Complex.
Mortenson’s design-build team includes TranSystems of Oakland, California. The four-story, 96,400 square-foot building will boast two wings with living quarters connected by a common area and a large outdoor courtyard with seating. The barracks will have 80 two-bedroom apartments. All apartments have shared kitchens, dining areas, and walk-in closets. Eight of the apartments will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards. All other apartments are designed to be adaptable to those standards. The building’s exterior will be made from precast concrete with a brick facing by a local small business. A covered walkway will provide shelter from the parking lot to the front door. Inside it will include two elevators, a recycling center, central laundry and a multi-purpose room.
In addition, the barracks will employ geo-thermal heating and cooling systems and are being designed and built to achieve LEED® Silver certification from the USGBC.
