November 12, 2010
Minneapolis, MN — Mortenson Construction, one of the leading builders of sports facilities in the U.S., and Hampton Enterprises have been selected to build the West Haymarket Arena in Lincoln, Neb. The new arena will be a multi-use facility capable of hosting sporting events, concerts, family shows, ice programs, and community activities. It will be the new home to University of Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball. The arena project is estimated to cost $168 million.
Owned and operated by the City of Lincoln, the West Haymarket Arena will serve the community and is estimated to create over 2,000 jobs throughout the construction process. Mortenson will manage construction and will work with Hampton Enterprises to hire local subcontractors and trades people for the project.
Construction of the approximate 16,000 seat arena is expected to begin in the summer of 2011 and be completed in time for the basketball season in the fall of 2013.
“West Haymarket Arena will be a great asset to the city of Lincoln and state of Nebraska,” said Derek Cunz, vice president at Mortenson Construction. “It will generate a lot of economic activity during construction and it will be an amazing facility for Nebraska sports and activities when it’s complete. We are honored to have been selected to be the builder of the West Haymarket Arena and look forward to our partnership with Lincoln.”
“This arena will make the city of Lincoln proud,” said Bob Caldwell, president and CEO of Hampton Enterprises. “The project will be managed by the experts in sports construction and built by the workers in our community. Our craftsmanship and hard work will result in a great home for Husker athletics.”
