Mortenson’s Sports Group Fuels Growth with New Projects and New Hires

Minneapolis, MN - Mortenson Construction’s Sports Group continues to grow and is setting higher standards in the way sports projects are delivered. With an ever-growing list of under-budget, early completion, and zero-punchlist projects, Mortenson is changing the way the game is played. This track record of success and delighted customers has fueled the company’s growth and reputation.
Recent sports projects awarded to Mortenson include: Pegula Ice Arena at The Penn State University; West-Haymarket Arena at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln; St. Pete Times Forum Renovation in Tampa, Florida; Sioux Falls Event Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; University of Arizona North End Zone Expansion in Tucson, Arizona; and the Lacrosse Turf Field at The Penn State University.
Mortenson’s entry into sports construction began more than two decades ago and a sustained focus has transformed Mortenson into one of the largest and most successful builders of sports and entertainment facilities in the U.S.
The existing leadership team of John Wood, senior vice president, and Allen Troshinsky, director of operations, has grown in size and expertise. In 2010, Derek Cunz was selected to lead the Sports Group’s day-to-day efforts and provide overall strategy development and direction as the new vice president and general manager. Derek is a 15-year Mortenson veteran who has an extensive history with Mortenson building complex facilities around the U.S. and overseas. Derek has also led Mortenson’s development of virtual design and construction tools and advanced the use of 3D technology to improve project outcomes. Also joining the team in 2010 is Todd Vigil, director of business development. Todd brings a wealth of knowledge and relationships to the Sports Group based on 15 years of working on public assembly projects. Todd has worked with the NHL, MLB, MLS, and 20 of the 32 NFL teams. Additional expertise from within Mortenson have been added to the group, including Jason Hopper, a senior design phase manager with extensive design phase management experience.
The Mortenson Sports Group, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is Mortenson Construction’s center of excellence for sports construction and leverages expertise in each of Mortenson’s regional offices based on geographic project locations.
