Mortenson Awarded DoubleTree Conversion

August 9, 2011

Bloomington, MN - Mortenson Construction was selected for the $12.5 million conversion of an existing Sheraton Hotel into a DoubleTree Hotel located in Bloomington, MN. Platinum Equity, the new owners of the hotel, selected Richfield Hospitality out of Denver to manage the hotel and hopes to reposition the 40-year-old hotel as the premier business and events destination in the Twin Cities. Flick Mars, out of Texas, will be the architect of record with Juno Development serving as the owner’s representative for the project.

The project scope encompasses a complete remodel and refurbishment of all 564 guest rooms and associated corridors, two bars, one restaurant, the pool and cabanas and all conference and public spaces.  Additionally, there will be exterior site improvements to include parking surface refurbishment and painting of the exterior shell. The hotel, at over 1 million square feet, is the third largest hotel and conference space in the state of Minnesota.

Mortenson's selection for this project was based largely the depth of the company's expertise and ability to successfully complete the project on budget. Previous experience working on active, fully occupied hospitality projects and the resultant disruption avoidance measures implemented also contributed to Mortenson's selection, as well as a strong relationship with the City of Bloomington and the Hilton Corporation, owner of the DoubleTree brand.
