Tips for Navigating Through the Interview Process

The interview process can certainly be an exciting time.  We’ve put together a list of tips for candidates navigating the process that we hope will be useful to you.

  • Have a solid resume.  Make sure that your work experience stands out and your educational path is clear.
  • Relax!  Make eye-contact, introduce yourself, and you’re on your way.
  • Do your research.  If you’re selected for an interview with Mortenson, plan to spend some time prior to that interview researching Mortenson.
  • Dress appropriately.  You can never be over-dressed for an interview!   Professional attire is always appropriate when interviewing, whether it’s on-campus or during second round interviews.
  • Ask good questions.  If you’re interviewing for a position with Mortenson, you probably have many questions.  Don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Stay in touch.  If you’ve met a Mortenson team member with whom you’ve had a meaningful interaction and you’d like to stay in touch, definitely do so.
  • Always act professionally.  Even during Second Round Interviews, although some events may seem more informal than others, always remember that you are interviewing for a job!
  • Meet other students in the process.  Especially during Second Round Interviews, most students are in the same boat, considering many different opportunities, locations, and companies.  Often, friendships are formed in these settings than can last for years to come.
  • Follow-up.  After your interview(s), be sure to stay in touch with the team members you’ve met.  After all, these could be your future colleagues, so you have the opportunity to build those relationships early.
  • Be prompt.  Be on time and be prepared.  Later in the process, as you’re making your decision, stay in touch with your contact throughout the interview process.
