Sustainable Construction

LEED-Accredited Sustainable Construction Experts

Mortenson Construction is committed to protecting and preserving the earth’s natural resources. Reducing our human footprint is a shared responsibility and we will continue to be a leader of eco-friendly business practices. Our commitment extends from our company headquarters and regional offices to our jobsites and to the personal practices of our team members.

To date, we have built 125 green/sustainable projects, more than 90 of which are either LEED-certified or have applied for LEED certification, and we have nearly 300 LEED-accredited team members qualified to help you make your decisions.

As proponents of environmental sustainability and green living, we will continue to pioneer a path for others to follow. To ensure the integrity and success of our efforts, we have established the following practices:

  • Regulatory Compliance. We understand and comply with all applicable international, federal, state and local environmental statutes in the locales in which we work. We seek to patronize partner businesses with similar environmental business practices.
  • Continuous Improvement. We know that today’s practices may be outdated by tomorrow. Significant progress has already been made in the conservation of our resources and the preservation of our environment, however, we'll continue to be innovators of change and seek better ways of proactively managing environmental responsiveness.
  • Communication and Education. Our team members and business partners will continue to be trained in our environmental practices and beliefs. In the event of an environmental incident, we'll immediately share the appropriate information with all required parties.
  • Waste and Resources. We seek to reduce waste from our operations by use of recycling and technological advancements to eliminate rework. We conserve natural resources by using recycled and reused products as well as implementing energy and water efficient measures.
  • Wildlife and Habitat. We will protect wildlife, their habitats and other sensitive ecology by complying with regulations and local ordinances. In addition, we will seek alternatives to preserve and restore natural habitats whenever possible.
  • Emissions. We will reduce our emissions by improving our operations. In addition, we'll seek alternatives for offsetting the emissions we create. As more efficient technology evolves, we will continuously improve our baseline emissions.

Mortenson’s Sustainability Beyond Construction

Mortenson’s commitment to sustainability does not end with our projects.  Mortenson has contracted to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) from clean, emission-free wind farms to power all of our U.S. offices. Our purchase corresponds to 100 percent of electricity usage for our headquarters and all six of our regional offices.  Mortenson’s agreement to purchase wind energy credits will have an estimated environmental impact equal to not driving nearly eight million miles, or offsetting seven million pounds of carbon dioxide production per year.

In purchasing the RECs, we are leading corporate responsibility by example. We are committed to stewardship of our environment, and reflect that commitment by serving customers who share that same interest.

In addition to purchasing wind credits and upscaling our standard office and battery recycling programs, Mortenson added the Prius, a hybrid sedan, to our company vehicle program. Our Green Advancement Team, a group of Mortenson professionals devoted to furthering our sustainable practices, meets regularly to explore new and better ways to reduce our negative environmental impact in standard construction practices, business practices, and in our personal lives.

To us, environmental sensitivity is about being socially and economically responsible. From building reclamation to product life-cycle analysis, we’ve been at the forefront of constructing facilities that benefit people today, as well as tomorrow.
