Resident's Home Gets a Facelift

For the 10th consecutive year, Mortenson Construction volunteers partnered with Hearts & Hammers and gave Rebecca G. one surprise after another on Program Day, May 16th, 2009. 28 volunteers transformed the exterior of Rebecca’s home into something she could be proud of again.

Rebecca was very excited for Mortenson Construction to work on her home. She said her house didn’t have very much curb appeal. The volunteers gave her 1923 home a face lift she won’t soon forget. Not only did they paint all the trim and the exterior of the home, they also rebuilt a push-out on the rear side of her garage and redid her landscaping giving her many new plants and flowers, not the least of which, daisies, which she proclaimed in awe, were her favorite!

Rebecca was a Journeymen Typesetter for newspapers for 40 years. She returned to school to be a LPN at the age of 54 and worked in a nursing home for nearly a decade until she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She now has full body neuropathy and can’t walk some days because of her condition. She has 2 children that live out of state and has a granddaughter with cerebral palsy that she visits as often as she can. Rebecca stays busy by volunteering with the AARP and has done lot of work with Habitat for Humanity.

As one volunteer so wonderfully put it: “She really brought out the heart in us!”
