The Portland Metro Council (Metro Council) recently announced the team chosen to build the “Headquarters Hotel” adjacent to the Oregon Convention Center. The goal of the privately owned and operated hotel, which is scheduled to open in late 2015, is to attract and serve national conventions in Portland. This will be Portland’s first Hyatt Regency property.
The team is comprised of Mortenson, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Schlesinger Companies, Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects, Elness Swenson Graham Architects, Piper Jaffray and Co., and Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels.
“The presence of a new hotel in the downtown Portland market will be a huge economic boost,” says Jim Yowan, Vice President of Mortenson Construction. “The development and construction of the hotel will create new jobs for the city, and help drive more business to the convention center when the doors open.”
The development team originally presented four options on two sites with several configurations. Metro Council selected the 600 room option on the site owned by Schlesinger Companies adjacent to the convention center. Hyatt Hotels Corporation will acquire the hotel upon completion.
Metro Council’s goal is to leverage private hotel development with minimal public investment, while maximizing the economic impact of Portland convention business across the region. The selection of the hotel’s development team is the latest milestone in a long-standing effort to bring convention housing to Oregon’s largest meeting center.
