The University of Colorado Denver - Research II project, a $201 million health sciences research facility, involved the construction of approximately 450,000 square feet of wet laboratories, core laboratory space, lab support, related faculty offices and conference rooms, animal research space and building support space. The Research II is the second major research facility at the Fitzsimons / University of Colorado Health Sciences Center; the building interconnected to the adjacent Research Complex I via bridge and underground tunnel.
Mortenson implemented our Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) processes on this project to coordinate all building elements-structural, architectural, and MEP systems-in 3D models. Then the 3D models were tied to the P3 schedule activities to produce 4D “movies” to promote visualization of the construction flow on the project over time. With these innovative coordination and planning techniques, Mortenson reduced delays due to field conflicts, improved productivity, allowed for greater use of prefabrication methods, and optimized schedule sequences.
