The SP-250 Helicopter Trainer Facility, built under NAVFAC task orders P-705 and P-707, is a 58,762 SF, two-story building designed for training Navy pilots on rotary-wing aircraft at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, VA. The facility consists of numerous trainer bays and classrooms, including areas for stationary training systems, computer systems, associated administrative activities, and high bays for full-motion operational flight trainer (OFT) simulators. The simulators are used for instruction and training on flying the MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, a new aircraft used by both the Navy and the Army. The facility also includes a state-of-the-art auditorium/ classroom used for briefing large classes and for special presentations.

This project also included site utilities and improvements, including demolition and site clearing; excavation and grading; parking area for over 120 vehicles, with asphalt paving and concrete curb and gutter; an upgrade to the storm sewer system; rerouting of an existing domestic water line; additional lines to satisfy increased domestic and fire protection water demand; a new sanitary main; a new gas line; CMU screen walls and fencing; and related landscaping.

The structure of the facility consists of a structural steel frame supported on a pile foundation system. Slab-on-grade construction is used for all first-level floors. The second floor of the administrative area is slab-on-metal deck construction. Exterior walls are constructed of pre-finished, insulated metal wall panels installed over the exterior sheathing. Wall panels and exterior sheathing are supported on and attached to structural studs and/or steel girts. The building is covered by an insulated, built-up bituminous roofing system installed over a metal joist and deck system. Low-E insulated window units are used on the perimeter of the facility. The facility was designed to meet DoD Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) standards and LEED Silver certification requirements.
