In 2010, the Hilton Coliseum was flooded with over eight water and left the home to Iowa State basketball with a devasted facility. Iowa State University officials selected Mortenson to help remediate their facilities and 24 hours later were mobilized on-site to help guide the remediation efforts. Mortenson worked closely with ISU to involve the local contracting community. This project was largely funded by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), which meant strict guidelines were enforced regarding estimating and procurement strategies. Mortenson, having an established history working with FEMA, was able to foster an ethical and competitive means of bidding the work while minimizing the risk to area contractors. Mortenson was successful in achieving a certificate of occupancy in time for the opening game of the 2011 Cyclone basketball season only 62 days after starting construction. The ISU Cyclone men’s basketball team, cognizant of the miraculous efforts made by the construction team and the University, opened their season with a 78-64 victory over Northern Arizona University.
