When the Nisqually earthquake damaged the historic Washington State Legislative Building in 2001, rapid stabilization efforts were critical, and a goal was established to reopen the building in time for the 2005 legislative session. Mortenson coordinated the move-out of the entire building, which included complete documentation of the building conditions for historical purposes and hazardous materials abatement. Mortenson then completed significant seismic upgrades to the structure and installed new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communications, and data systems. Historical materials throughout the building were cleaned and repaired. A disruption avoidance plan allowed for continued operations of the campus throughout construction.
