Renovation Provides Collaborative Learning Environment While Embracing Technology

October 30, 2013 UW Odegaard Library built by Mortenson

Open twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week with more than 10,000 students passing through its doors each day, the Odegaard Undergraduate Library and Learning Commons is one of the largest undergraduate libraries in the country.

Originally built in 1972, the renovation of the 40-year-old structure provides an open, collaborative learning environment that embraces technology and provides adaptable study spaces. Renovating one of the campuses busiest facilities with minimal closures was a one of the biggest challenges.

 Key project results include:

  • Design and construction modifications increased whole building utilization by 13%
  • Energy costs are predicted to decrease by 51%
  • Renovation completed in 12 months while allowing students continued to use the space for studies
