Mortenson’s High Voltage Transmission Group Hired as Electrical Contractor on Shannon Wind Project

May 29, 2015

The power delivery group recently broke ground on the Shannon Wind Project located near Windthorst, Texas, which is owned and managed by Alterra Power Corp. (Alterra). The electrical scope consists engineering, procurement and construction of a 10 feeder 40 mile underground collection system, a 34.5/345kV single transformer substation with reactive power capability and a 345kV single-circuit double-bundled transmission line that ties the projection to the ONCOR substation.

Mortenson will also be responsible for the construction of the access roads, foundations, and turbine erection. The 204 MW project will utilize GE turbines, and at completion will deliver power sufficient for approximately 61,000 households.

“We are very happy to work with Mortenson on our first U.S. wind project and appreciate the depth of experience they bring to the table”, said Paul Rapp, VP Wind and Geothermal Power for Alterra.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2015.
