Mortenson is currently constructing the Panhandle Wind Project, a 218 MW wind power project located in the Texas Panhandle. The Project will be the first wind farm to tap onto Texas’ new Competitive Renew¬≠able Energy Zone (CREZ) transmission infrastructure, which connects to the state’s main power grid operator, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

The project is using 118 GE 1.85 megawatt turbines, and also involves construction of a 345 kV substation, transmission line and operations facility. Completion of this first phase is estimated in June 2014.

The project team is using machine controlled grading models developed by Mortenson’s VDC team to control earthwork moving equipment through GPS.  The project benefited with a more efficient project completion schedule because of the models.

Mortenson’s contract will help to create between 200 and 250 jobs during the peak of construction with many of those jobs coming from Carson County and the surrounding areas.

The wind project will help curtail the use of the region’s precious water resources, offsetting approximately 903,000 tons of CO2 each year from coal-fired generation, the equivalent of taking more than 177,000 cars off the roads.
