Xcel Energy selected Mortenson to construct the Rush Creek Wind Project in Limon, CO. This is the first direct wind project we have constructed for Xcel. Rush Creek will also be the largest wind project Mortenson has ever built as well as Colorado’s largest, boosting the state’s wind generation capacity by 20 percent.
The civil scope of self-performed work includes over 250,000 CY of earthwork, placing approximately 300,000 ton of aggregate across 500,000 lf of new access roads, public road improvements, laydown yards, foundation excavation and backfill of 300 turbine sites which totals in excess of 400,000 CY as well as O&M building site work. Construction of the two phase project began in March of 2017 and is expected to complete in October of 2018. The terrain the project team will be working with is flat to rolling hills. An expected challenge for this project is that the two phases are 35 miles apart, laydown yard to laydown yard, requiring a very efficient schedule to keep everything moving and finished on time.
