To celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week, Project Engineer Jessi Lynn spoke with 6th through 8th grade students at Anwatin Middle School about career opportunities in construction. WIC Week is organized by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and recognizes women as a viable component of the construction industry. It also highlights the opportunities available for women in the industry and emphasizes the growing role of women in construction.

Jessi’s presentation was part of the Girls Taking Action (GTA) speaker series, where successful women leaders share with young girls how to use their personal power, develop their careers, and give back to their communities through service-learning.

“I strongly believe in bringing resources and empowerment to young ladies,” said Jessi of her involvement with GTA. “Creating an interest in construction provides unique opportunities, whether that means going to college or to trade school.”

The GTA program impacts are overwhelmingly positive. Participants have an average GPA increase of 67% and a 95% graduation rate (compared to 81% for Minnesota and 60% for Minneapolis Public Schools). Additionally, 75% of participants go on to attend college.

“I am inspired by the women of Mortenson. There are so many people here willing to help empower these bright, courageous girls,” said Jessi. “It has been a humbling and rewarding journey and I encourage everyone to find opportunities to support the next generation through education, advocacy, sponsorship, and mentorship.”
