Mortenson's 2016 Safety Week A Success!

We Are Stronger and Safer Together

“When you look to your left and right, those are the brothers and sisters that you’re working with on a project each and every day. You need to make it your personal obligation to ensure that they go home to their families and loved ones in the same condition as when they arrived. On behalf of Mortenson, I want to thank you for all the efforts that you’re putting in and let’s keep it safe.”

Vice President & General Manager, Greg Werner, kicked off Safety Week with this personal safety message to the project team during stretch and bend at Mortenson’s College of Lake County jobsite.

On Wednesday May 4th, speakers addressed hundreds of craft workers at a campus wide safety meeting and luncheon hosted by Mortenson at The University of Chicago Campus North Residence Hall and Dining Commons project site.

More than 300 construction professionals from various trades united to show their support and commitment to safety. Among the attendees were team members from three general contractors from the Build Safe Chicago group, who also have active projects on campus.

The University of Chicago Senior Project Manager, Eric Eichler, took a moment to thank all the craft workers for their hard work. “You have done an exceptional job. I get compliments about how nice of an experience it is to be next to this site. Everyone has been professional and everything has been top notch.  We appreciate it,” said Eichler.

James Martinek, a representative from OSHA spoke specifically about his experience with the importance of onsite safety practices and stated, “We’ve been doing this for about five years and I can honestly say this is one of the best events I’ve attended.”

Executive Director of the Latino Worker Resource Center, Dan Ramir, also expressed how important it is to ensure that the men and women who work on construction projects are properly trained, especially in a language that they understand. “In my experience, I believe Mortenson is one of the leading contractors in safety. As far as general contractors go, I haven’t seen anyone better” said Ramir.

Safety Week culminated with our office wide All Hands Safety & Quality Meeting, a training that takes place twice a year led by our Safety Director, Terry Klingele. Training included concrete pump truck safety, falling object training, tool tethering, concrete formwork safety applications, infection control and GHS.

Congratulations to the following craft workers for being recognized as leaders in the field.

At Mortenson, we are committed to eliminating all worker injury. Every Mortenson team member, customer, trade contractor, supplier, architect and engineer can expect that our work sites place their personal safety as our highest priority.
