Portland Day of Caring
By Kali Jeter

Mortenson’s Portland office is currently in the midst United Way campaign - a tradition that our company has been proud to take part in for more than 50 years. Every year, we take two weeks to participate in numerous volunteer activities and to reflect on giving to the United Way (or other charitable organizations) through a financial pledge.

This year the Portland office doubled up during their annual United Way campaign with two different opportunities to volunteer within the local community. The team spent both Thursday and Friday of last week helping sort donated food, clothing, and children’s items to benefit those in need in the Portland metro area. Additionally, for every four hours of time each team member volunteered at a day of caring, Mortenson donated $200 to the United Way – amounting to $2,400!

At the Sunshine Division on Thursday, our Portland team members sorted 25 pallets of donated food and over 1,000 items of clothing!

Since 1923, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been providing food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built a 94-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.

The Sunshine Division offers food assistance six days a week at their warehouse and 24-hour food assistance through our partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, who store Sunshine Division food boxes at each police precinct to be dispatched at any time. They also provide no-cost, bulk food and food boxes to 20+ local hunger relief non-profits serving Clark, Clackamas, Washington, and Multnomah counties.  In addition to food relief, the Sunshine Division offers new and gently-used clothing in an on-site clothing room and fund new school clothes for low income children through the Izzy’s Kid’s program which pairs a Portland police officer with a child for a one-on-one shopping experience.

In conjunction with the Northwest Children’s Outreach, our team members sorted through 50 bags of clothing donations!

Northwest Children's Outreach is a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to helping families in the Portland area and surrounding communities. The organization helps these families by providing clothing, infant care products, diapers, formula and many of the other necessities parents need for their children. The organization works specifically with case workers and school counselors to help identify those children who require assistance, and volunteers pack individual orders for each child based on their age, size, and needs!

In our first week of the United Way campaign, Mortenson team members in the Pacific Northwest have pledged over $82,000 to those in need!
