The Main Terminal Expansion to the Washington Dulles International Airport was a major expansion to a landmark facility. Mortenson was the general contractor for this project that was envisioned 30 years ago by the original design architect, Eero Saarinen.
The scope of this project was to double the size of the existing main terminal building and to replace the existing enplaning and deplaning roadways all without interrupting the passenger or air traffic flow. The enplaning and deplaning roadways are each over 1,300 feet long and up to 5 lanes wide. Mortenson worked with the Airport Authority after the bids to develop a detailed traffic-phasing plan that included 27 different traffic shifts, a 1,300-foot temporary elevated roadway, and a multi-phased construction sequence for the duration of the project.
Significant portions of the work were performed on the active airside terminal facility. Mortenson and the Airport Authority specifically developed plans to work sequentially to eliminate disruption of the airside operations.
