Continuing a nearly decade-long relationship with Iowa-based MidAmerican Energy, Mortenson was selected to construct the 500 MW Highland Wind Project, spanning more than 62 square miles throughout northwestern Iowa. Mortenson provided EPC services for access roads, foundations, and electrical collection systems along with turbine erection and tower wiring of 218 Siemens turbines.
The project mobilized in November 2013 to perform initial construction activities that meet time-critical goals for completing foundation construction prior to the end of the year, in order to meet PTC requirements. With such a tight time frame between selection and mobilization, the team planned aggressively to develop an execution strategy to ensure our commitment was made to MidAmerican. Using micrositing techniques with VDC, the project team was able to coordinate an optimal turbine plan for each site.
Following a winter shutdown period, work resumed in the spring of 2014 and completed in the fall of 2015.
