EDP Renewables (EDPR) selected Mortenson to construct the Meadow Lake VI Wind Farm in Remington, IN. A competitive price, area knowledge and relationship built from past projects, such as the Meadow Lake V, aided project selection. Meadow Lake VI will be the ninth wind project constructed for this customer and is the sixth phase of a larger project being developed by EDPR.
The scope of work included substation, transmission line, access roads, foundations, collection system installation, erection of 12 Vestas V110 2.0 MW turbines and 49 V136.3 MW turbines, wiring and met towers. We also self-performed all civil work. Construction started in April of 2018 and was completed in December of 2018. At peak construction, about 150 people will be employed on site.
During preconstruction, the Meadow Lake VI team realized that they would have to cross eight creeks with a crane during erection. Moving cranes from turbine to turbine, especially with uneven terrain, is costly and time consuming. The team came up with an innovative new method to move the crane saving the project 13 crane breakdowns. After factoring in bridge materials, equipment rental and assembly costs, the owner saved approximately $600,000 plus three (3) weeks of time on the erection side.
