Mortenson Construction was selected by San Francisco-based developer, NaturEner, for the construction of the Rim Rock Wind Project. Located on a 21,000-acre site, Rim Rock generates 189 MW of wind power. Along with Montana’s vast wind resources, the siting for this project was selected because of the ease of access to the property and the business-friendly development atmosphere in this part of Montana.
Mortenson was responsible for the design and construction of access roads, foundations, erection of 126 Acciona 1.5 MW turbines, underground electrical collection system, 230kV transmission line, (2) 230kV substations, the generator tie line, and an O&M facility.
Using VDC, the team mitigated the impact of a substantial change in the alignment of roads and turbines due to environmental impacts by creating a 3D civil model to understand the magnitude of the change and continue work without significant delay to the schedule. The project team used the model to optimize earthwork and grades of roads, crane pads and erection areas, and to minimize overall project impact.
