Mortenson Celebrates Wind Week 2018

American Wind Week is August 5-11, 2018. Mortenson will be celebrating by helping to host an event at Meadow Lake VI Wind Project with customer EDPR and turbine provider Vestas on Tuesday, August 7 from 9 am - 12 pm. We are also happy to report Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed August 5-11 as American Wind Week in Minnesota! Read more about how wind works for America below and see it in this video.

What is American Wind Week?

In celebration of wind power emerging in 2017 as America’s #1 source of renewable energy capacity, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) hosted the inaugural “American Wind Week." Annually, wind companies and supporters now host a wide variety of events around the country to show how wind works for all Americans.

American leadership now extends to wind power thanks to our world-class natural resources and the latest innovations in big data and power engineering.

  • Parts of the U.S. heartland and coasts are known as the “Saudi Arabia of wind energy” because our competitive resource advantage is just that good.
  • We can keep our lead because inexhaustible wind energy is a resource the U.S. can harness for generations.
  • A typical new wind turbine in the U.S. can power the equivalent of more than 750 average homes. U.S. wind turbines are the most productive among countries with the highest levels of installed wind power, like China and Germany.

Wind power is a job creating engine for America, supporting a record 105,000 U.S. jobs in farm, factory and port communities across all 50 states.

  • Wind turbine technician, a skilled middle-class career, is one of the fastest growing professions in the country.
  • There are over 500 U.S. factories in the wind industry supply chain.
  • The wind industry is proud to hire U.S. veterans at a rate 72 percent higher than the national workforce average.

Wind works for all Americans by generating economic opportunity, homegrown energy, and clean air from sea to shining sea.

  • From farming communities to factory towns, wind power brings new investment and new revenue to improve schools, roads and emergency services.
  • Wind power is America’s newest cash crop, paying over $267 million dollars a year to farmers and ranchers who lease part of their land for wind turbines.
  • Wind farms generate over 30% of the electricity produced in four states and over 10% of the electricity produced in 14 states.
  • Increased reliance on wind energy is good for our health and families because it avoids air pollution, creating nearly $8 billion in public health savings each year.
