Can a school be renovated to be as bright and functional?
The well-known School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a hub for budding artists in downtown Chicago. Mortenson was brought on board as Construction Manager to renovate two spaces for the school, The Sullivan Center at 36 S. Wabash and 116 S. Michigan.

The Sullivan Center at 26 S. Wabash (4,800 sf): The Sullivan Center serves as the student union for SAIC, housing both a Classroom Suite and a Career Development Suite. Neighboring the Sullivan Center in a separate building was a dated law office that SAIC purchased and then incorporated into the renovated Sullivan Center. Our project team demolished the outside walls in both buildings and were able to connect the two elevations to create an enhanced, enlarged space. The Sullivan center boasts spectacular new views of Grant Park, Millenium Park, and Lake Michigan and now has a cool, modern ambiance.

116 S. Michigan (5,200 sf): Mortenson also renovated the SAIC space at 116 S. Michigan, which houses the registration center for the University. The remodel transformed the student registration process. Students now follow color coding from one stage of registration to another, giving the building a simplified way-finding process. Space is donned with bright colors and artistic touches that are worthy of the Art Institute brand.
