Mortenson provided general contracting services for the major renovation of United Airlines’ baggage handling system area within Terminal 1 at O’Hare International Airport. The multi-phased project included building a temporary baggage inspection area for the TSA prior to the renovation and expansion of the original space. Mortenson also delivered an extensive package that included mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and HVAC system upgrades to support the new scanning, baggage routing, and inspection areas. New conveyor belts for the inner workings of the complex baggage routing and inspection systems were also provided. As is the case with all of our airport work, security compliance, such as badging, was mandatory in order to have access to these sensitive areas. Extremely close coordination of the work activities was critical as not to disrupt the continuous baggage transportation operations of the airline or general operations of the airport.
