
Steve Lay, P.E.
Manager of Engineering Services | Engineering
Steve is a licensed professional engineer in 12 states and has been in the energy industry for more than 17 years helping to design and construct over 7.6 gigawatts of renewable generation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and a master’s degree in renewable energy science from the University of Iceland.
Steve has worked on numerous renewable energy projects ranging from 20MW to 600MW and with voltages from 120V up to 345kV. Steve specializes in electrical design optimization of substations and collection systems for renewable generation projects.
As Manager of Engineering Services, Steve helps lead the Engineering Services group’s electrical design services supporting substation, renewable collection, and system studies, while overseeing the group’s quality team. Steve also assists with Engineering Services’ hiring and growth into new areas, as the group continues to expand at Mortenson.
Steve started with Mortenson as a field engineer on wind projects and leverages that first-hand construction experience to align Engineering’s designs with construction operations for better integration and streamlined project execution for our customers.
After growing up in Minnesota and beginning his time with Engineering Services at Mortenson’s headquarters in Minneapolis, Steve is now based out of Mortenson’s Denver office where he helps to grow Engineering’s presence in Colorado.
Steve is married and has three young children that keep him busy. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer, exploring the Colorado mountains, and spending time with his family.
