Tell us more about your background/experience/education. What decision or path led you to the construction industry/Mortenson?

I am a graphic designer at heart. When I was younger I would design menus for dinner and print banners for every occasion. During college I interned at Better Homes & Gardens magazine and when I graduated, I started there full time. I always thought I would stay there, but I took a chance and moved to Phoenix, AZ, where I spent seven years in commercial real estate marketing. One of my coworkers got a job in Mortenson’s Phoenix office and when I moved back to Illinois, she referred me for the senior marketing coordinator position in the Chicago office. I really feel like I’ve found my home in this industry and at Mortenson. At its best, construction is organized, systematic, and solution-oriented. So is design. I love taking complex concepts and breaking them down into easy-to-digest visuals and a cohesive message.

Tell us about your female role model or mentor that helped you grow your career. How do/did they inspire you?

While I was in Phoenix I had a manager that really took me under her wing. I have so much respect for her because she led by example at every turn. She worked hard and included me, coached me, valued my opinion, and pushed me outside my comfort zone to develop new skills. She surrounded herself with a strong network of women and when she sensed I had reached my potential in that position, she unselfishly leveraged her network to help me find a new job where I could continue to grow. That career move ultimately set me on the path to where I am today and I am forever grateful.

What advice would you give other women considering a career in construction or the AEC industry?

Be open and receptive to opportunities that come your way. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It might feel intimidating or vulnerable to speak up and ask questions, but showing you are genuinely interested in understanding is the best way to communicate you care about the work you do. You don't have to be the loudest in the room. There is a place for every personality and every skill set in this industry! It is challenging, rewarding, and you will be proud of what you do!
