Accountant  

SUMMARY  

Mortenson is currently seeking an Accountant that will prepare and maintain timely, accurate, and reliable accounting and financial records for M.A. Mortenson Company and related entities. Ensure financial information and activities are accounted for in compliance with applicable internal policies and technical accounting guidance. Maintain the accuracy of financial information through analytical review procedures, internal controls, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts.  

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Perform the accounting activities and analysis relevant to non-construction entities and businesses, including: 
  • Preparation and posting relevant journal entries. 

    • Support the assessment of current processes in place and implementation of process improvements to leverage automation and minimize manual work. 

    • Coordination of relevant communications / collaboration with internal stakeholders, including relevant Finance and other teams that support the non-construction entities and businesses. 

    • Create, maintain, and manage projects, project billings, and contracts for the non-construction businesses. 

  • Process and analyze accounts receivables in a timely manner partnering with various project managers, buyers, and other key project stakeholders to result in favorable cash flows for the non-constructions businesses. 
  • Review, manage, and reconcile outstanding intercompany payables associated with non-construction project billings to ensure accurate intercompany balances to better enable more timely payment of intercompany payables.  
  • Complete month-end financial close activities, including preparation and posting of journal entries supported by appropriate documentation, analytical review of account activity, and research. Identify and pursue opportunities to streamline financial close processes and assist in implementing improvements identified. 
  • Prepare monthly / quarterly account reconciliations and supporting documentation for assigned accounts. Assist in the development of enhanced reporting / analysis of data to support account reconciliations and related accounting and project accounting activities. 
  • Maintain formal procedures, internal controls, and appropriate segregation of duties for key accounting and project accounting processes and calculations. Assist with identifying and implementing continuous improvements to accounting and project accounting processes. 
  • Ensure accounting processes and activities align with internal policies and technical accounting requirements. Assist in documenting and reviewing process flows related to key accounting & project transactions / activities to clearly articulate and assess the relevant impact to affected financial processes, accounts, and projects. 
  • Work with external auditors on interim and year-end audit activities, including preparation of workpapers and supporting analysis. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance 
  • Minimum of two years related experience, including prior experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and project accounting. 
  • CPA designation strongly preferred.  
  • Mix of public accounting and private industry accounting experience preferred.  
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills 
  • Strong computer skills, with experience in general ledger software; Oracle Financials / Projects preferred. 
  • Thorough knowledge of technical accounting principles / US GAAP, accounting processes / best practices, and internal controls 
  • Shown ability in meeting expectations and related deadlines; ability to work with different personalities and work styles. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills 
  • Ability to take complex accounting topics, summarize / tailor information for a specific audience, and present effectively. 
  • Professional, business-driven mentality with the ability to communicate and interact with all levels of the organization, as well as external parties.  
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with initiative to seek innovative solutions and drive efficient change. 
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Understanding of order management processes and the associated accounting transactions for purchase orders and related payable invoices.  
  • Detailed orientated and can manage multiple projects simultaneously; effective time-management skills. 
  • Results- and deadline-oriented to ensure delivery of appropriate products and services in an accurate, complete, and timely fashion. 
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across multiple departments in a collaborative, team-based environment. 
  • Active listening skills and effective communication, including an openness to diverse input and feedback. 

 

The base compensation range for this role is $71,400 - $107,000. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
