SUMMARY
The Senior Internal Communications Specialist plays a key role in shaping and delivering internal communications that strengthen team member engagement, support business priorities, and reflect Mortenson’s purpose and values. This position will serve as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert on internal communications—partnering with leaders and stakeholders to develop clear, compelling, and timely messaging that aligns with best practices. The Senior Communications Specialist will lead high-visibility projects, manage complex communication initiatives, and ensure all content aligns with company strategy, voice, and culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communication Planning:
Partner with the Senior Manager of Internal Communications to design, implement, and evaluate strategic communication plans for company-wide initiatives
Proactively identify opportunities to enhance communication effectiveness and recommend improvements.
Content Development & Editorial Leadership:
Support internal initiatives with clear, consistent, and motivating communications Create, edit, and oversee high-quality content for internal channels, including intranet, internal social channels, digital signage, email campaigns, leadership messages, and presentation materials.
Ensure all content is engaging, audience-focused, and aligned with company’s tone and brand while delivering messages to the right team members at the right time.
Project Leadership:
Lead communication projects from concept to delivery, including setting timelines, managing workflows, and ensuring quality outcomes.
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned initiatives, coordinating with stakeholders across departments.
Stakeholder Engagement & Advisory:
Act as a communications advisor to business leaders, partners, and project teams, providing counsel on message framing, audience engagement, and change communications.
Build strong relationships across the organization to gather insights, identify communication needs, and deliver impactful solutions.
Measurement & Continuous Improvement:
Use data, analytics, and feedback to assess the effectiveness of communications and adjust strategies accordingly.
Stay current on industry trends, emerging tools, and best practices to continually elevate internal communications.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field.
Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in internal communications, with a track record of developing and delivering communications that drive engagement and support organizational priorities.
Must be proficient in Modern SharePoint O365.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities, with a focus on aligning communication efforts with organizational goals.
Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data to inform and improve communication strategies.
Proficiency in using communication tools and platforms, including content management systems, email marketing software, and social media.

The base pay range for this role is $79,600 - $119,400. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
