The Lewis Main Exchange Addition and Modernization project at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) transformed one of the base’s primary retail and gathering facilities to better serve servicemen and women. The project involved the modernization of 174,000 SF of existing retail, storage, food, and mall space, including structural improvements to the facility, as well as a 117,000 SF expansion that added new retail, storage, food, and mall areas. A redesigned food court provided comfortable interior and exterior gathering spaces, enhancing the experience for patrons. The project also included significant site improvements, such as utility modifications, additional parking, concrete paving, asphalt, sidewalks, and landscaping, creating a more functional and welcoming environment. Construction was completed while maintaining full public access to the shopping center, requiring extensive phasing shifts and close coordination with the customer and owner. Additionally, the project incorporated high-level polished concrete finishes throughout public areas and updated the site layout and building to meet current UFC Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) requirements, ensuring both functionality and safety. This comprehensive modernization and expansion successfully delivered a facility that meets the operational, security, and comfort needs of the JBLM community.
