Project Manager I 

  

Mortenson is seeking an experienced Project Manager I (Controls) to lead projects with professionalism, flexibility, and resourcefulness in a dynamic environment. This role involves managing project quality, timeliness, and safety, mentoring the project team, and developing strong customer relationships through excellent service and communication skills. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Financial Management & Cost Control

  • Own and manage the overall financial health of the project, including budget adherence, cost forecasting, and margin protection
  • Develop, maintain, and reconcile project financial projections, cash flow, and equipment forecasts
  • Allocate the project estimate into the financial system, establish cost codes, and ensure accurate cost tracking
  • Monitor cost trends, identify variances, and proactively implement corrective actions
  • Review, approve, and process invoices to ensure alignment with contract terms, budget, and work-in-place

Billing, Contracts & Change Management

  • Prepare and submit monthly owner billings, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and proper backup documentation
  • Coordinate project financials and billings with accounting
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier contracts, including scope alignment, compliance, and financial controls
  • Lead change order pricing, review, negotiation, and execution, protecting project financial position
  • Support and lead EPC contract negotiations, including commercial terms, technical exhibits, and schedule requirements

     

Procurement & Buyout

  • Lead the procurement, bid, and award process for major subcontractors and suppliers
  • Ensure buyout aligns with the approved budget, project schedule, and risk profile
  • Evaluate trade partner pricing, qualifications, and contract terms with a focus on cost certainty and value

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage and develop Assistant Project Managers and Project Engineers with a focus on financial rigor and accountability
  • Approve timecards, provide regular feedback, and support professional growth of the project team
  • Set clear expectations around cost tracking, documentation, and financial reporting

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with Superintendents and field leadership to align cost, schedule, and execution strategies
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with internal stakeholders, customers, and trade partners
  • Build strong, trust-based customer relationships through transparent financial reporting and issue resolution

  

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum six years of related construction project management experience, preferably on complex or large-scale projects
  • Demonstrated strength in cost management, forecasting, contract administration, and change management
  • Proven ability to support all responsibilities for complex projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple financial and contractual priorities
  • Working knowledge of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Experience in one or more of the following preferred: commercial construction, EPC contracting, data centers, renewable energy, or emerging technologies
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, project controls systems, and relevant web-based applications
  • Positive, professional demeanor with strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply Mortenson policies and procedures

The base pay range for this role is $113,500 - $170,300 (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

  

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.  This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan. 

  

Visa sponsorship is not offered for this position.  

 

Our postings are typically open a minimum of 5 days and an average of 44 days.
