Engineer II or III - MEP Electrical Application
SUMMARY
The Engineer II or III - MEP Electrical Application role is a primarily MEP-focused engineering position within Engineering Services, supporting project teams through technical review, interpretation, and application of electrical and MEP systems. The role provides engineering expertise during RFP phase, equipment submittal reviews, specification interpretation, and technical coordination related to power systems infrastructure.
In addition to core MEP responsibilities, the role includes a secondary focus on substation application engineering. The position is expected to spend approximately 50% of time on MEP engineering work and 50% on substation application engineering, adjusted based on project demand. This role provides technical engineering support
This position offers opportunities at both levels 2 and 3, allowing candidates to apply based on their experience and qualifications. Compensation for this role is determined based on factors such as experience and location.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• During the RFQ phase, this role reviews initial specifications and baseline testing requirements, provides technical comments, identifies potential modifications or add‑alternates, and evaluates any testing beyond code compliance necessary to manage Mortenson’s risk profile
• Review MEP electrical equipment submittals including switchgear, UPS systems, ATS, panelboards, and distribution equipment.
• Review manufacturer submittals against project specifications, drawings, and approved CDEs.
• Identify technical non-compliance, coordination issues, and constructability concerns.
• Provide written engineering comments and recommendations.
• Interpret MEP specifications and design intent.
• Participate in technical coordination meetings.
• Developing pursuit level substation designs including general arrangements, BOM, control buildings, and one-lines mainly for renewal generation projects
• Perform 3rd party reviews of external engineering substation designs
• Assist project management team with technical guidance on internal designed projects
• Ensuring high level cross discipline coordination and reviews between substation physical, P&C, relay, studies, substation civil/structural and collection interfaces others.
• Provide application-level engineering support for substation electrical equipment
• Review equipment ratings, environmental conditions, and code compliance.
• Assist with technical evaluations and standardization efforts.
• Coordinate with Supply Chain and other operating groups/project teams.
• Communicate engineering findings clearly to non-engineering stakeholders.
• Document assumptions, interpretations, and recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Engineer II Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
• 2+ years of relevant MEP or power engineering experience.
• Experience reviewing technical submittals.
Engineer III Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
• 4+ years of progressive MEP-focused or power engineering experience.
• Ability to independently lead technical reviews.
• EIT/PE license preferred
The base pay range for this role is $84,100 – $133,300. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
